All too often people are afraid to be themselves because others are always judging them of their life choices. People have a set way of seeing the world and if your view conflicts with how they see the world, there is going to be some disagreement. If you take the time and listen without judgement no matter how crazy they may sound to you, it could lead to some understanding. Now, they may not listen to you without judging but, you are not in control of them. What I am suggesting is that you be more understanding and it might bring them around to be more understanding.
So, listen to understand. How hard is that? Well, it may be harder to do if what they are saying is really awful. But, you can ask questions to clarify and seek further understanding as to why they hold the view. This might even be a step in getting them to see your side of the issue at hand.
Now, if everyone could learn this simple practice, the world would be a kinder, gentler place. Just imagine if you will for a moment that people taking time to understand each other rather than being argumentative. What kind of world would this be if people just listened and left the judgement behind? Some of us would like to think that it leads us to a more peaceful place where fighting occurs less. Now it won’t make the world more perfect as it is perfectly imperfect as it is. But if leader sat down and talked rather than rushing off to war, wouldn’t that make listening without judgement worth it?
