What would an actualized society look like? This society of course is one in which nearly everyone lives a life of self actualization. Fiction has had to fill in for what we think it would look like from the pilot episode of Futurama to classics such as The Shape of Things to Come and Clarke’s finale to the Space Odyssey series 3001: The Final Odyssey. We can even take time and imagine it ourselves as we delve into our own actualization. Come along and see.
As stated in a previous post self actualization is a state in which a person lives in which his or her basic needs have all been met and they can pursue what they may be truly meant for. They don’t have to worry about what others think of them. Happiness is what they do really. When some one can really go after what makes them happy and brings them true satisfaction. Living a wonderful life to ones true potential is the biggest part of self actualization.
Fiction paints a good picture of what life could be like if we lived in a world in which everyone could live be self actualized. In the pilot episode of Futurama Fry discovers that it really is his place of fulfillment to be a delivery boy as he is excited at the end to be a space delivery boy. Towards the end of Welles’ The Shape of Things to Come the world has been rebuilt and humanity shaped into a new utopia of learning and everyone is a polymath. In 3001: The Final Odyssey humans live in space, on Earth, and on ring that is attached to the Earth by four space elevators. People get to learn quickly with a brain to computer interface and get to have the career that would be most suited to their self actualized self.
Now if you can imagine your own version of this future in which everyone could live life in a self actualized way, what would it look like? Would all of the problems that we now face as humans be solved? If we could solve our problems and everyone had their needs met it could be a great starting point to creating that world. Some days it is hard to imagine what such a world would be like but some days humanity gives us hope. Maybe one day we as a species will evolve into such a place, until then we should be excellent to each other.
So, what would an actualized society look like? Well we know that everyone would have their basic needs met and they would be free to pursue their dreams. Fiction has given us a nice picture of what the world could be like if we could accomplish this dream. But it is up to us, all of us and our imagination to bring things about to enact this change. Now, what will you do to help lay the framework for such a world?
