Sometimes things that seem dumb and crazy make a difference in this world. The 2014 ALS Ice bucket challenge for example, went viral and raised over 8 million dollars for ALS charities in one day. Occasionally silly things like that do go viral but, never before has something gone so viral on social networks while making such a difference to charities. What if we could make the world a better place while having fun and being silly? Maybe more people would know about charities if they could be spread around like this ice bucket challenge has.
Going viral in the summer on 2014 the ice bucket challenge raised millions for ALS research charities. The ice bucket challenge had originated as a spin off of polar plunge events in which people would dive into the frigid water during the winter months. The polar plunge has been around for years and in 2013 during the summer in New Zealand the first recorded ice bucket challenge was launched. While these events have been popular none of them have gone as far as the 2014 ice bucket challenge. What is it about this event that makes this challenge so viral?
Some things just go viral and they are often regarded as stupid or silly. However, in a way when things go viral they touch us on a primal level. More often than not it is something that makes us laugh that gets spread around. The 2014 ice bucket challenge did something more when it went viral; it raised awareness and money for ALS charities. Usually charities don’t get to reap the benefits of something going viral but, something about this challenge changed that.
Maybe more charities could benefit from silly viral posts like people dumping ice water on their heads. What if every summer we could get a charity to go viral? We could make the world a brighter place while having fun and sharing it for the world to see on social media. The possibilities could be endless, a dry mouth challenge for charity water, a bottle of ice cold water down your pants for AIDS charities, or even a fire walk challenge for PTSD. Just make sure it isn’t something that will harm yourself or other people and it will be alright.
What charity would you like to see go viral? The ice bucket challenge started off as a spin off of the polar plunges. There are other silly things that groups do to raise money for other charities that can be adapted as viral video crazes. Charity events of teams pulling a truck could be turned into pull your car video challenges. With many charities doing so many community events there are countless possibilities about what could be adapted. Be creative and create something cool, that is a challenge to each and every one of you! Have fun, change the world!
