Currently the world is on fire with rage, fear, and hatred. If I could share one thing with the world to calm that fire it would be by teaching mindfulness. Starting with a daily mindfulness meditation. It worked wonders for a group of prisoners as documented in the film the Dhamma Brothers, which is worth checking out if you want to see it in action. Of course there are some people who are ignorant of what mindfulness is, some have even compared it to witchcraft, which is not at all what it is. Even atheists do it, some of the most successful people on the planet have a daily mindfulness practice.
It’s people killing people out there in the world, mostly it seems that people have out of fear or anger. All over the news you can see how bad things are getting. People are too paranoid and not proniod. The fear is in control and it makes ration decision making go right out the window. But even the most hardened killers have changed through mindfulness meditation.
Some of the most successful people have a practice of when they take ten or twenty minutes out of their day and just sit in silence. Steve jobs famously used it to calm his mind and focus while building his business empire. Buddhist monks would say it tames the money mind, others say it leads to being able to focus on their goals better.
In the film The Dhamma Brothers four inmates who have all be convicted of murder are taught meditation in a retreat style. The contemplation and meditation in the film is more rigorous than a daily twenty minute practice but, it is the same concept. Rather than spend just twenty minutes a day the inmates practiced the silence for ten days solid. Prisoner Grady Bankhead described it as, “tougher than his eight years on Death Row.” After the retreat the prisoners had become more peaceful and mindful.
Another thing in the film was interviews with people who lived near by the prison. One interviewee said, “it was like they are teaching the prisoners witchcraft!” Of course nothing can be further from the truth. As stated previously the meditation is about silent mindfulness; the mindfulness is not at all like chanting and making offerings to make magick happen. The meditation is magic in the mind.
So, why not give yourself a challenge and spend thirty days trying out a mindfulness meditation practice? It might change things for you in ways that you couldn’t have possibly imagined. There are benefits that are even too numerous to list here. Below are links to check out for more on the practice.
